Silverware Silverplating is the best silverplated finish you can buy. It has all the look of precious metal without the cost! True, its price is twice the cost of brass ox but the finish is 99.9 percent pure silver, thickly applied, over the brass stamping. It even feels thicker than a real sterling stamping, is durable, does not turn.....UNLESS....you put it in Liver of Sulfur. In this video we discuss the safe use of Liver of Sulfur to turn Silverware Silverplating to a light gunmetal color, just as sterling sheet would turn. You then use elbow grease to buff it back to silver highlights. When using Liver of Sulfur use caution and remember to rinse your pieces with cool water after you remove them from the dip. Also, if heating pieces like the raw brass ones to put in LOS you need to use tongs.....do not hold them w your fingers as you will be burned, the metal heats quickly. Dispose of the spent solution properly! We also talk about a whitewashed finish using white and patina colored Gilder's for a delicate vintage look.
